It’s a well-known fact that the Windows Media Player can’t play all media types out of the box. One need to either use third-party media player or install codec packs to solve this issue.
Some people simply opt for third-party media players even after installing codec packs for WMP12. Though players like VLC, GOM, foobar2000, WINAMP offer great set of features, Windows Media Player’s use friendly interface and decent set of features are good enough for most users.
When you install a third-party media player, it becomes the default media player for most of media types. So, if you want Windows Media Player to be the default player for all media types even after installing a third-party player, you need to follow the simple steps given below:
1. Type Default programs in Start menu search area and hit Enter key to launch the default programs window. Alternatively, you can also click Default Programs entry present in Stat menu to open the same.
2. In the Default Programs window, click the first option named Set your default programs to view the list of applications installed to open different file types.
3. Under the Programs list, select Windows Media Player and then click Set this programs as default option present in the right-side to set Windows Media Player as the default program to play all media files.
If you want Windows Media Player to open certain media extensions only, use the Choose defaults for this program option and then select the extensions you want WMP to open by default. Finally click Save button.
