It’s a well-known fact that the Windows Media Player can’t play all media types out of the box. One need to either use third-party media player or install codec packs to solve this issue.
Some people simply opt for third-party media players  even after installing codec packs for WMP12. Though players like VLC,  GOM, foobar2000, WINAMP offer great set of features,  Windows Media Player’s use friendly interface and decent set of features  are good enough for most users. 
When you install a third-party media player, it  becomes the default media player for most of media types. So, if you  want Windows Media Player to be the default player for all media types  even after installing a third-party player, you need to follow the  simple steps given below:
1. Type Default programs  in Start menu search area and hit Enter key to launch  the default programs window.  Alternatively, you can also click Default  Programs entry present in Stat menu to open the same.
2. In the Default Programs window,  click the first option named Set your default programs  to view the list of applications installed to open different file types.  
3. Under the Programs  list, select Windows Media Player and then click Set  this programs as default option present in the right-side to  set Windows Media Player as the default program to play all media files.  
If you want Windows Media Player to open certain  media extensions only, use the Choose defaults for this program  option and then select the extensions you want WMP to open by default.  Finally click Save button.
